Each semester, LEAF will offer a variety of programs for children and adults.

Below are some classes we plan to offer.


INTERGENERATIONAL CLASSES

Artful Acrobats: Intergenerational

This program incorporates music, art, and games around a weekly and seasonal theme. Children will build strength and creativity through a variety of fun activities and art projects. Helping to promote a sense of fun and community, this is a class to explore art, music, and movement with friends.

Child must be potty-trained. No pull-ups.

Appropriate for Ages: 2 to 3 years with Parent or Adult Caregiver

Jumping Jacks

This class is sure to get everyone on their feet for fun and physical activity. Incorporating music and games, children and their companions will utilize a variety of tools—from bean bags to balls, instruments to rhythm ribbons—to help foster coordination, strength, large muscle control, fine motor skills, and social development. It’s a colorful, musical, joyful way to spend time together!

Making Memories with Arts and Crafts

Spend some special mornings together with your child creating one-of-a-kind masterpieces to keep as mementos or to give as unique and heartfelt gifts for family and friends. Each session will be devoted to designing and assembling a different keepsake, including garden stepping stones, picture frames, holiday ornaments, and original artwork. This is the perfect class for helping you be prepared for birthday and holiday gifts for the special people in your life. We provide all of the supplies, you supply the creativity and personalization to some beautiful and treasured memories.

Messy Play

Paint, water, rice, glue, play-doh—Oh My!!! Let your child spend time getting messy with all of these things in our Messy Play program. Young children need time for tactile play with a variety of materials, but we don’t always have the time or energy for the set up and clean up that’s required to do this at home. Come join friends and mix, measure, paste, splash, and paint in a lively and prepared environment. It’s all the fun without the cleanup!

CHILDREN'S CLASSES

Adventures with Art

This course allows students to have an overview of three types of artistic expression: drawing, painting, and sculpting. Basic techniques for each area of art will be presented for two-weeks each, with samples from well-known artists as inspiration for their work. Students will have the opportunity to revisit their favorite medium for the final two-weeks of the session or may use the time to complete or refine any earlier pieces of artwork that they have created. This is an excellent introductory course for students to explore art for the first time and try their hand at different techniques before committing to one medium for a full 8-week session.

Artful Acrobats: Children

Cartooning

This introductory class to cartooning will incorporate basic cartoon drawing techniques using pen and ink, as well as watercolors. Each week, students will draw a new character in their sketchbooks.  The characters will be enhanced and adapted in multiple sketches throughout each session. After exploring a variety of characters, students will choose their favorite and create a watercolor of their cartoon suitable for framing.

Chess

Playing chess has many benefits. It helps students with problem-solving, logical and critical thinking, concentration, memory, sportsmanship, and social skills, to name just a few. More importantly, chess is fun and can be a lifelong pastime! In this class, students will be grouped by ability for weekly instruction. Students will learn the basics of chess—names and moves of each piece, strategies, etc. Group instruction will be supplemented by a review of moves, and each session will include hands-on game play.

Appropriate for Ages: Kindergarten through 8th Grade. Students will be divided into age and skill groupings.

Colorful Creations

Colorful Creations will expose your child to the wonderful world of color. Basic art principles such as line, shape, texture, and of course, color will be introduced through the use of markers, crayons, paint, and other mediums. Children will learn how colors relate to one another and
how colors can be mixed and used to create original compositions. They will also explore the meanings and feelings associated with certain colors. Through instruction and visual aides, children will study the work of several famous artists and in turn create their own interpretation
of that artist’s work. Finished masterpieces will surely be colorful additions to display in your own home art gallery!

Creative Movement

Your children will develop strength, focus, balance, body awareness, and self-esteem through physical activity in this highly interactive class. Children will learn to move to the rhythm of the music and will increase their gross motor skills while listening to some of their favorite songs. This class will teach your children a variety of different movements that incorporate health-related fitness components. They will jump, twirl, clap, stretch, and learn ways to freely express themselves through their movements.

Kids in Motion

Put a spring in your child’s step by joining us for Kids in Motion. There’s non-stop action as children participate in a variety of activities that will get them up off of their feet and moving to the music. This highly interactive class will help to develop your child’s strength, focus, and balance.

Digital Designs

This dynamic class introduces children to basic principles of design, including line, shape, and color. Each of these elements of design will be incorporated by the children into original works of art as they create postcards, T-shirts, greeting cards, and/or posters using both free-hand drawn designs and computer-generated designs. Students will work with age-appropriate computer programs to assist in their graphic design creativity. Group instruction will be enhanced by one-on-one guidance through the creative process, and the children surely will be proud to show off their one-of-a-kind designs at the end of each session.

Edible Art

Who says you can’t play with your food? In this class, children will create artful masterpieces that are good enough to eat! Using foods from all of the food pyramid groupings, children will “paint” with food and make mini-sculptures and collages that not only look good, but also taste delicious. Classes also will include guidelines for healthful eating and nutrition, balancing healthy foods with ‘treats’. 

Please advise the instructor of any food allergies upon registration and note that this is a hands-on class for all children who attend.

Educational Games

With such busy schedules, time for a game of checkers or Monopoly isn’t always there. Why not have your child join friends for an afternoon of good old-fashioned board games? We’ll take games like Scrabble, Mastermind, Monopoly, Battleship, Checkers, and more off the shelves for an afternoon of fun and well, games! Children will learn the rules and strategies for each game and participate in round-robin play. Classes are organized by age and foster turn taking, fair play, and good sportsmanship, along with some good old-fashioned fun around the game table.

Etiquette and Social Skills Workshop

Elbows off the table! Say “please”! Use a tissue! If you’re tired of repeating reminders for these basic social graces, look no further. Children who join this workshop will learn the basics of good social skills through interactive games and play. The value of thoughtful behavior, patience, and making friends will be emphasized through topics like “Meet and Greet,” “Out and About,” “How to Say It Best,” and “Meet and Eat.” The session culminates with a special meal in our dressy best with a special guest where children are able to practice their manners in a real-life social setting.

Green Gardening

We invite your children to get their hands dirty and grow their own green thumbs in our gardening program. Students will build an incubator for seeds that they will care for while observing the transformation from seed to plant to vegetable. Plants will be transplanted to an outdoor community garden and/or brought home for patio pots to sustain their work. Different types of vegetables and their varying growing needs will be explored, and students will learn how to continue the care for the plants and uses for their harvest, as well. Discussions of gardening, composting, recycling, and rain barrels are all a part of the focus of this program.

Library Adventures

“Library Adventures” will move your children through the different types of literature available to them at your local library via our lively story times. Themes will include favorite children’s authors, fairy tales, folk tales and non-fiction works. Hands-on crafts will round out the children’s story time experience each week. After listening to the books carefully chosen for each session, the children will create a craft that relates to the weekly themes. Authors will include Eric Carle, Laura Numeroff, Maurice Sendack and many others. Non-fiction and other genres shared during story times will represent some of the best publications available to young readers today.

Meditation with Imagination

We will begin each class with breathing exercises and stretches, before taking our imaginations for a walk using meditation stories. As the children create mental images of gardens, friendly animals, and sparkling stars, they will strengthen their imaginations while being introduced to the practice of meditation. Research shows that meditation has incredible benefits to the mind. It helps with focus, improves moods, and has overall calming effects. We will also read delightful tales with wisdom lessons. These stories include time for focused breathing, gentle stretches, and quiet listening.

Mixed Media Collage

Ever wonder how you could make something out of water bottle caps, buttons, beads, and paper? In this class, we will use everyday objects, along with oil pastels, paper, markers, and paint to create a colorful collage. The instructor will demonstrate how to create landscapes, still life, and even self-portraits by using found objects and art supplies. Each week, we will be introduced to a famous artist, and we will use that artist’s work to inspire the collage that the children will create. Come and explore mixed media collage with us!

Musical Adventures Around Our World

Take a musical trip around the world! Students will ‘travel’ to a new country each week to learn about the many different musical traditions, styles, and instruments that can be found in our world. Not only will students be exposed to a variety of styles of music, but they will also come to appreciate how music can be seen as a ‘universal language’ that we can all enjoy and understand. Come travel with us as we explore other cultures through the language of music!

Painting with Watercolors and Acrylic

Come explore the fun world of painting! In this eight week class, your child will learn how to hold a paintbrush correctly, how to mix color, and how to create wonderful works of art by using both watercolor and acrylic paints. Children will be invited to use their own creativity to paint on many different surfaces, such as canvas, fabric, and wood. The class will begin with the use of watercolor, and students will be shown how to use different techniques such as wet on wet, wet on dry, and dry brush to create an image or a design. The second half of the class will focus on the use of acrylics. Students will begin with the use of black and white paint and will advance to using and mixing colors. The conclusion of the class will incorporate the use of both mediums, and your child will have the opportunity to discover all the wonderful things they can create by mixing watercolor and acrylic together!

Poetic Enrichment

Develop an appreciation for poetry and get those creative juices flowing by painting with words some poems of your own. Using the Dodge Method of Immersion, students will gain an appreciation for a variety of poetry styles and read classic and contemporary works. After exploring these masterful examples, they will begin on their own poetry-writing journey under the guidance of a published poet and judge for writing competitions.

Public Reading

Many adults share the same fear—speaking in public. And yet, the demands of today’s world require knowledge on how to speak before an audience—a skill that carries individuals far. Public Reading is a program that fosters confidence in speaking publicly by beginning with an existing piece of writing.

Students will pick a favorite short story and learn public reading techniques so they are able to publicly perform their piece in front of others.  Students will work on memorization, intonation, acting, and good public speaking skills. The culmination of the course will be a celebration of the skills gained with a public reading reception before an audience of supportive parents and peers.

Sculptures ‘R’ Us

Children see things differently from adults, and given the time, space, and supplies, they can create some amazing pieces of art. In this class, students will create 3-dimensional artwork using a variety of media, including cardboard, plaster, wood, and more.  With instruction on form and shape, children are given freedom to shape basic materials into whatever their imagination decides. Children will be introduced to famous sculptors by looking at samples of sculpture in a variety of forms—bronze, wire, glass, and clay.

Singing in Spanish

This course is an exploration of traditional Latin American song. Children will sing and recite traditional songs and rhymes in Spanish while learning of their origins. Students will learn about Latin American culture, Spanish pronunciation, and the meaning of the words they sing. The course will be a fascinating journey through music and culture!

Sports and Games

Current research in the journal Pediatrics has shown a positive trend in healthier eating and exercising habits of young people in the U.S. Let’s keep this trend going by making movement a fun and daily part of even our youngest children’s lives. Our Sports and Games class for children in kindergarten will engage participants in a variety of exciting activities sure to energize your child. Using parachutes, hula hoops, jump ropes, and various sporting equipment, children will absolutely “have a ball” during each session!

Storybook Art

The love of reading must be nurtured from a very young age. Children are often mesmerized by a good story, asking adults to read their favorites again and again and why not again! In this class, we will read some beautifully written children's books and create props or puppets that are reminiscent of the story. The children will have the opportunity to share the story with friends and their family using their creations. Retelling stories is a great way to learn event sequencing and improves children's communication skills at the same time. We are sure to create some wonderful story-time memories to share with your entire family!

Teen Service Project

Today’s teenagers are a terrific but often untapped resource in our communities. The “Teen Service Project” is a student-driven service project led by area teens to benefit a local charity. Participants will research area charities and choose which they will focus on for each session’s service work. Teens will learn about fundraising, organizational skills, time management, public speaking, finances, and more to provide their chosen charity with assistance. Not only will the participants learn business principles, but they will also gain community service hours and find out how their individual talents can benefit their community.

Woodworking

This class is designed with the Montessori student in mind. Children will be taught how to safely handle and use real woodworking tools. Working at their own pace, students will learn how to sand, paint or stain, and hammer to create something from scratch. Students will learn that different parts of the world produce different types of wood, each with its own set of characteristics, and they will become familiar with the most popular trees used in woodworking. At the end of our session, participants will not only understand more about the great natural resource that wood is, but they will also have their own completed project to bring home.

Yoga

Your children will explore deep breathing exercises and different yoga poses in a fun and relaxed atmosphere. Yoga has been said to help children feel more relaxed and focused, and even experience healthier sleep patterns. Studies show that yoga can assist neuromuscular development, encourage midline crossing motions, relieve tension and stress, promote thinking and memory, stimulate auditory processing and responsiveness, reduce stress and anxiety and increase concentration and attention span, as well as building self-esteem, confidence and respect for self and others. Each class will be 45 minutes or 1 hour long.

ADULT CLASSES

Digital Photography

If you haven’t made your way through the manual that came with your camera, this is the class for you. Throughout the sessions, you will learn how to use your digital camera effectively to capture the moments you want to keep forever in a photograph. We’ll review how to operate the camera: from choosing the correct exposure, shutter speed, and aperture, to what all those other fancy symbols are on your dial. Additionally, students will learn how to compose an image for landscapes and portraits, as well as how to capture images that reflect a more creative look at our surroundings.

Once you’ve captured those favorite images, we will explore how to compile images into uniquely designed, personalized photo albums and scrapbooks. Students should bring their cameras (digital camera with manual adjustments), camera manuals, and a thumb drive to class.

ESL and Conversational Immersion

This adult English as a Second Language class will assist non-native English speakers with practical skills to help them navigate within their community here in the United States. Students will have language instruction, as well as discussions to promote cultural awareness. Using movies, daily conversation skills and practice, specific vocabulary building, and plenty of personalized instruction, students will work toward gaining comfort in their English-speaking community. Students should bring with them a dictionary that translates from their native language into English.

Appropriate for Ages: Adults 18 and up

Introduction to Watercolor and Acrylic Painting

Have you ever wanted to try painting but didn’t know what to use or where to start? In this introductory class, you can get in touch with your creative side and learn the basics of working with acrylics and watercolors. We’ll look at basic color theory and techniques, examine some of the art that surrounds us, and take a dip into some art history along the way. With the help of the instructor, and in a relaxed and supportive environment, begin your journey by learning different painting techniques and trying your hand at painting objects, people, and landscapes.
